Are you looking for a natural way to improve your dog’s wellbeing? Have you heard about hemp seed oil for dogs but aren’t sure whether it is just a gimmick?  In this blog we explain some of the benefits.

A good balance of Omega oils is important for your dog’s health and hemp seed oil contains an ideal 3:1 ratio of Omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) to Omega-6 (linoleic acid).  These are essential fatty acids that support healthy looking skin and soft, shiny coats and, rather as they do in us humans, promote overall joint health by supporting flexibility and helps with cardiovascular function and a healthy immune system.  However, here’s where hemp seed oil comes in – your dog can’t produce these fatty acids naturally so they need to get them from their diet.

Hemp seeds are also high in another fatty acid called gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) which is not quite so well known but is just as essential for our canine companions.  Most dogs have the right amount of GLA but there are times when they need more – such as after hard exercise or possibly when they are stressed. This is when supplementing becomes important.

Your dog has substances in his or her body called prostaglandins which, amongst other things, help to smooth muscle contractions, control inflammation and regulate body temperature.  A building block for prostaglandins is GLA.

But, wait, there’s more.  Hemp seeds are also considered to be a complete protein source, which means they contains every essential amino acid. And they contain Vitamin E and healthy minerals that work together to help your dog’s skin health, immune function and overall nourishment.

So here are five reasons why you should consider giving your dog hemp seed oil:

1. Pain Relief

If your dog is restless, then there is a chance they are carrying an injury but it could also be a sign of pain in their joints. Hemp seed oil helps to reduce inflammation and decrease nerve-related pain. A study in 2010 showed that GLA in hemp seeds reduced arthritis symptoms by 25%.

2. Skin Conditions

Hemp seeds are commonly used in cosmetic products and soaps because the oil penetrates the inner layers of the skin to promote healthy cellular growth.  The balanced fatty acids in hemp seed oil also play an important role in reducing the inflammation associated with common skin issues, including pruritic skin disease, atopic dermatitis and granulomas.

3. Reducing Anxiety

Many different things can cause anxiety but all are damaging to your dog’s wellbeing. Particularly common is separation anxiety where your dog becomes nervous, or frightened when detached from its owner.  Some vets recommend hemp seed oil to treat anxiety in dogs as a natural alternative to prescriptions or even to CBD.

4. Fighting Cancer

The incidence levels of cancer in dogs and humans are very similar. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, almost half of dogs over the age of 10 will at some point develop cancer.  Researchers at the American Cancer Society say there’s evidence that people with cancer, diabetes and skin allergies don’t make enough GLA.  Please be cautious of sensationalist claims that cannabis, CBD or hemp cure cancer – and we certainly don’t make those claims – but, because GLA in hemp seed oil is so well balanced with Omega-3 fats, it can help reduce inflammation and strengthen your dog’s immune system.

5. Weight Management

GLA in hemp seeds also accelerates the body’s fat burning mechanism, increasing energy levels and making your dog more active and healthy. GLA releases serotonin, which gives a sense of fullness which means your dog may eat less, thereby reducing the risk of growing overweight.

This list is just the beginning.  Other reported benefits of hemp seed oil are that it helps with nausea and inflammatory bowel disease.  So with all these benefits you would expect a catch – a complicated way of administering it to your dog perhaps or maybe it’s an expensive product to buy?  In fact, hemp seed oil can just be added to your dog’s food in small quantities so it costs just a few pence a day.  You can find dosage guidelines in our shop.  Even for large dogs, one bottle is a 2-month supply.

There are two things to bear in mind though. Hemp seed oil is a polyunsaturated fat which means the oil is unstable at higher temperatures.  If your dog has cooked food, don’t add hemp seed oil while it’s cooking but let it cool down first before adding it.

Secondly, if your dog is on a poultry-based diet, this may already quite high in polyunsaturated fats and linoleic acid so adding hemp seed oil may not always be necessary. However, for beef-based foods, hemp seed oil is a great way to balance your dog’s diet.

Voyager hemp seed oil for pets comes from seeds of the hemp plant which are grown organically using no chemical pesticides or herbicides. It doesn’t contain either CBD or THC so there is no risk of your dog getting high.
